The Texas care notebook

The state part of the picture

Texas rules begin with real care.

Start with who will assess you, how the visit will happen and who will fill any prescription. Bring questions about your own situation to the clinician or the relevant board.

As of September 2026, Texas requires online care to meet the level of care your medical problem would need in person. The clinician must explain the care and get your agreement before the visit.

Get clear

The first online visit has conditions

As of September 2026.

A first live video visit can establish you as that clinician's patient in Texas. The visit must provide the care your medical problem needs.

Texas also allows a clinician to review relevant photos or health records you send earlier. That review must provide the care your medical problem needs before treatment or prescribing.

Health records include your health history, test results and past prescriptions.

For a first visit, the law allows a phone conversation combined with that review of photos or health records. It does not list a phone call alone.

Different terms apply if you are already the clinician's patient or another clinician is covering calls for your usual one. Phone care can be allowed in those situations.

Ask who can write your prescription

As of September 2026.

A nurse practitioner has extra training as a nurse to assess patients and plan their treatment. A physician assistant treats patients under a doctor's supervision.

In Texas, these clinicians need a signed agreement with a supervising doctor before they can prescribe under the doctor's authority.

The agreement is the doctor's written permission to prescribe under supervision.

Ask who will assess you and who supervises their prescribing. Ask each person to explain their role rather than guessing from a job title.

The pharmacy has its own check

As of September 2026.

A pharmacy outside Texas generally needs Texas pharmacy licensing to send prescription medicine into the state.

The pharmacy board can make an exception for a pharmacy that sends only occasional prescriptions to Texas. The law calls these isolated transactions. One order for you does not by itself show that the pharmacy qualifies.

If a pharmacy claims this exception, ask the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to confirm it for that pharmacy.

Get the dispensing pharmacy's name, then check its record with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

An IV offer has separate rules

As of September 2026.

IV means fluids enter a vein. Texas has a separate law for IV care you seek for temporary comfort or wellness. It covers that care outside hospitals, doctors' offices and other licensed health facilities.

An advanced practice nurse is a nurse with added training for a medical role. A nurse practitioner is one kind.

Under this law, a doctor may let a physician assistant or advanced practice nurse order the treatment under the doctor's supervision.

The doctor may let those clinicians or a registered nurse give the treatment under the doctor's supervision.

That law does not create a list of allowed ingredients. Ask about the proposed medicine as well as who will give it.
