The Texas care notebook

The money conversation

A headline price leaves questions.

Ask for a written total that includes the visit, any tests and the medicine. Then ask what changes after the first month and what happens if the clinician does not prescribe.

As of September 2026.

Get clear

Separate the care fee from the medicine

As of September 2026, adverts from some online weight-care services listed medicine as a separate charge alongside a monthly care fee. This does not tell you what your service includes. Ask for both charges in writing.

Ask whether the care fee includes follow-up messages or only the visit. If there is a membership, ask about cancellation, refunds and any minimum term.

For tests, ask who orders them, which tests are being requested and who sends the bill. Ask for a quote before assuming they are part of the visit fee.

Read a real price with its limits

As of September 2026.

The government cash-price page listed semaglutide (Wegovy) weight-loss tablets starting at $149 a month in September 2026.

That starting price was for the tablet with the least medicine in it. It was not the price of every tablet strength, meaning the amount of medicine in each tablet.

This is a medicine-price example, not a quote for your full care. Ask for the price of the exact prescribed product and any other charges.

Ask what happens after an offer ends

As of September 2026.

In the government's September 2026 offer, semaglutide (Ozempic) pens cost $199 per one-month supply for the first two supplies. It applied only to the two lowest amounts per shot listed in the offer. Ask the pharmacy whether the amount on your prescription qualifies.

The offer applied to new self-pay adults living in the US and ran through December 31, 2026.

After those supplies, the offer listed $349 a month for the lower amounts per shot and $499 for the highest amount. These prices required payment outside insurance.

Those payments could not be claimed back from insurance or counted toward its deductible, the amount paid before coverage begins.

December 31, 2026 was the end date in the terms of several cash offers and savings cards; prices after that date need checking again.

Compare like with like

Put the exact medicine, the later-month medicine price and the care fee beside each other. Leave a space for tests and follow-up charges.

A useful closing question is: What will I owe if I keep this plan going, and what can change that total?
